2017-18 Immersive Dance Series

Urban Bush Women: Hair & Other Stories

Residency: February 11-13, 2018

Performance: February 13, 2018

Founded in 1984 by choreographer Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, Urban Bush Women (UBW) seeks to bring the untold and under-told stories and histories of disenfranchised people to light through a woman-centered perspective.  As members of the African Diaspora community, The UBW believe that their work creates a more equitable balance of power in the dance world and beyond.

Zollar and Urban Bush Women, along with director Raelle Myrick Hodges and comedic writer Keisha Zollar, will present HairStories 3.3, a multidisciplinary, evening-length work that addresses matters of race, gender identity, and economic inequality through the lens of hair, primarily that of African American women.

Hou Ying: Tu Tu

Residency: March 19-24, 2018

Performance: March 23, 2018

Hou Ying, the dance company’s artistic director, was trained in traditional Chinese classic dance, folk dance, ballet, traditional Chinese opera, and martial arts. In the United States, she also studied dance techniques from dance masters such as Martha Graham, José Limon, Merce Cunningham, and Trisha Brown. Hou Ying has devoted her lifetime to exploring how to integrate the eastern rhyme and spirit that includes the natural movement of the body with the western post-modern dance techniques that involves the deconstruction of the body. As a result, she has formed a unique and highly recognizable dance form – where the idea of body-mind holism is the key to showing how the consciousness drives the mind, the mind in turn drives the body, and the body reflects the mind.

The piece, Tu Tu, deconstructs the way the body moves, by using release techniques and four-dimensional spacial recognition to continually explore and investigate how physical movement is influenced by time and space.

Sidra Bell Dance NY: Mönster Outside

residency: April 2-5, 2018

Performance: April 5, 2018

In MÖNSTER OUTSIDE, Sidra Bell Dance New York has joined forces with innovative Swedish composer Per Störby and his critically acclaimed chamber ensemble New Tide Orquesta; genre bending vocalist Joseph Keckler; and Sweden’s Visual Relief (projection mapping), to develop a flexibly voyeuristic discourse about the nature of outliers in contemporary society.

Marrying dance theater, chamber music, projection mapping, vocal scoring, and scenic and lighting design, the work will locate and depict aspects of human joy and despair via the experience of the “outsider”. The title MÖNSTER OUTSIDE is a play on Swedish-English cognate irregularities; in Swedish, ‘mönster’ translates as ‘patterns’.

This work will engage live audiences in the process of deconstructing social structures that create outsiders in our society, looking at outsiders as those that live and operate outside of the norm. It will also comment on the relationship between nature and the pursuit of technology.

Onstage, the work will use a theatrical interplay of movement and sound patterns between dancers and musicians. MÖNSTER OUTSIDE will depict themes of human alienation in a technologically driven culture, isolation, youth culture, identity and gender politics, rage, and the search for intimacy in constantly shifting contemporary life.
