Agua Furiosa, CONTRA-TIEMPO’s newest evening length work, challenges audiences to confront harsh realities of race in our country. Inspired by Shakespeare’s The Tempest and Oya, the Afro-Cuban deity of wind and storms, artistic director and choreographer Ana Maria Alvarez, harnesses her unique urban-latin movement approach to create a visually stunning and thought provoking evening of dance performance. Agua Furiosa merges call and response, a live vocalist, water themes, fierce physicality and the performers’ own personal narratives. Audiences will walk away from Agua Furiosa, impacted and inspired to locate themselves inside the complex and transforming conversation of race in America. Creative collaborators include sound designer d. Sabela grimes, vocalist Pyeng Threadgill, lighting designer Masha Tsimring and dramaturg Michael Garces.
CONTRA-TIEMPO is a Los Angeles based dance company founded and directed by Ana Maria Alvarez. The company fuses Salsa, Afro-Cuban, and contemporary urban and abstract dance to create an electrifying blend of physically intense and politically astute work. This invigorated approach is rooted in community. The company members include professional dancers, artists, immigrants, teachers, activists, organizers and movers of all types in Los Angeles. Each company member lives, expresses, and struggles within the infinitely complex political and personal landscapes that Alvarez addresses in her work.
CONTRA-TIEMPO, much like the community it reaches, is a tapestry. The company is dedicated to transforming the world through dance; their work brings to life voices that are not traditionally heard on the concert stage.
“an edgy examination of the complexity of resistance and struggle for Latinos in the United States and a joyous celebration of community”
