Overview
Approximate concert length: 90 minutes
Lila Downs is one of the most influential artists in Latin America, known for her singular voice and charismatic performance. She often combines genres, language, and rhythms as diverse as Mexican rancheras and corridos, boleros, jazz, hip-hop, cumbia, and folk music. Her music often highlights social justice issues for migrants, women, and indigenous people.
Throughout her impressive career, Lila has recorded duets with Norah Jones, Yo-Yo Ma, Santana, and many more. She has sung with symphonies and jazz orchestras, given concerts at festivals and in concert halls, and performed at the White House, the Latin GRAMMYs® and the Oscars. Lila has recorded fifteen studio albums and won six GRAMMY® awards.
Her latest album, “La Sánchez,” is inspired by sounds of Northern Mexico and written in response to her personal history— Sánchez is her mother’s last name--and the sudden loss of her husband, Paul Cohen. Nominated for a 2024 GRAMMY® for Best Música Mexicana Album, this newest installation in her musical career is perhaps her most personal.
