‘Hippolyta’s Disappearance’ is an interdisciplinary solo performance with 7 virtual partners. Hippolyta is the Amazon Queen in the play ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ by William Shakespeare on which the piece is based on. Her fate envelops the play and builds the framework for my investigation into the role and significance of her character within the play. ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ is a complex social critical commentary on marriage, patriarchy, authority and autonomy, social and political hierarchy and on the inconstancy of love and human emotion in general. The play also takes an important stance on the powerful political and social impact of theatre within everyday life. …..Every aspect of the play is still current today.

In ‘Hippolyta’s Disappearance’ one character slips into the various different situations of the play, merging with a current day persona and the mythological character of Hippolyta, searching for an identity within and outside of society. Surrounded by a modular set design that serves as projection surface, shelter, barrier and podium, the solo performer interacts with projections of individuals and groups of people both in current day and abstract dimensions.

This presentation is the result of an intensive workshop with dancer/choreographer/performance artist Karola Luttringhaus. CFCC students will present their own, original performance works – combining elements of dance, movement, visual art, and theater in unique forms of visual expression. Visiting artist Karola Luttringhaus has been able to provide a unique learning and performing experience for students thanks to a CFCC Foundation mini-grant.
