SOIL
Michael Sakamoto is an interdisciplinary artist and scholar active in dance, theatre, performance, media and photography. Sakamoto’s research and performance interests include contemporary imaginings of the butoh-based “body in crisis,” corporeal and mediated embodiments of self-reflection and social resistance.
Soil is an evening-length, intercultural dance that was co-written and co-choreographed with the performers: Cambodian classical and contemporary dancer Chey Chankethya, Thai traditional and contemporary dancer Waewdao Sirisook, and Vietnamese-American contemporary dancer Nguyen Nguyen. Referencing legacies of political conflict, war, genocide, and environmental destruction, Soil explores crisis in three Southeast Asian cultures and transnational, East-West identity through the dancers’ personal narratives and choreography.
This program is proudly brought to the Wilson Center by Cape Fear Stage, the presenting arm of Cape Fear Community College.
