The Wilson Center at Cape Fear Community College is excited to announce that Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award-winning recording artist Buddy Guy will be at the Center on July 16, 2024, at 7:30 pm as part of his Damn Right Farewell tour. Buddy Guy is a genuine American treasure and one of the final surviving connections to an historic era in America’s music evolution.
Buddy Guy is a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, as well as a Billboard Magazine Century Award For Distinguished Artistic Achievement, Kennedy Center Honor, and Presidential National medal of Arts recipient. In addition to 8 Grammy Awards, and the 2015 Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award, he holds 38 Blues Music Awards – the most that any artist has ever received.
Crowned King of Chicago’s electric blues scene, and a pioneer of Chicago’s fabled West Side sound, Buddy Guy was born in Louisiana in 1936, and began building make-shift guitars, and teaching himself to play, when he was 7 years old. In 1957 he moved to Chicago, and began playing alongside Blues paladins such as Howlin’ Wolf, and Muddy Waters. He has been a major influence on Rock titans like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughn, and many more too numerous to name here.
Buddy Guy turns 87 on July 30th, and began the Damn Right Farewell Tour on February 12, 2022 at the Mahindra Blues Festival in Mumbai, India. “We’re going to make it to a lot of places we’ll probably never play again,” said Buddy Guy in an interview discussing the tour with Billboard.com. The Damn Right Farewell tour has been playing to sold out shows, with Buddy Guy continuing to demonstrate why fans are willing to camp out overnight – in January, in Chicago – for front row seats.
