Lila Downs: Raw Emotion and Cultural Celebration

Lila’s life story is as impactful as her music. Raised in both Minnesota and Oaxaca Mexico, her father was a Scottish-American art professor and filmmaker, and her mother was a Mixtec Indian cabaret singer. She grew up moving across the US and Mexican border, absorbing the vastly different cultures. Her fascination with language, indigenous traditions, and social justice rooted deeply in her musical practice, allowing her to craft story into song.

Throughout her career, Lila’s vocal strength and captivating stage presence have remained integral to her performances. With fifteen studio albums, ten nominations, one GRAMMY® award, and five Latin GRAMMY® awards, Lila’s global stardom is evident.

In 2023, she released “La Sanchez” which NPR called, “her most personal album.” In the wake of her partner’s sudden death, Lila honors the struggle of grief, love, and history. “La Sanchez” details the difficulties of partnership and love between Paul Cohen and Lila, but it also honors her family and cultural history. Sanchez is her mother’s last name, a fitting tribute sung in traditional “Mexican regional style.”
